AVID Program Field Trip and Project with Bass Museum
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program is a new happening at Miami Beach Senior High School run by Mrs. Eva Regueira, Career Research & Decision Making Instructor. The program prepares hard working students in the academic middle – B, C, and even D students – for college eligibility, including four-year college eligibility. These students are generally the first in their families to attend college, and the AVID Program assists students in following their college paths.
(Must find a student who participates in the AVID program and ask them about it- What do they do in the program? How does it benefit them? How do they feel about the structure of the program?)
The AVID Program has brought out the best in many students, enrolling them in honors, Advanced Placement, and elective AVID classes from fourth to twelfth grade. The AVID elective classes are one period each school day devoted to learning study, organizational, and critical thinking skills with help from tutors and other students.
Students in the AVID Program participate in motivational activities for enrichment and college readiness, such as a field trip to the Bass museum proposed by Mrs. Requeira. Although a club at Beach High had an agreement with the Development Coordinator last year in which nobody complied, Mrs. Requeira met with the Development Associate and Building Manager at the Bass Museum. She thought that the students could do a project in collaboration with the Bass Museum, perhaps even a Freshman Project.
(For this paragraph: Intends to quote Mrs. Requeira about the freshman project and inform about what it may consist of… what will the students do?)
Miami-Dade County Public School students may enjoy free entry to both the Bass Museum on 21st Street and the Wolfsonian Museum on Washington Avenue in South Beach. There are actually guided tours through the two museums; one visited each before and after lunch. Exposing students to museums and getting them involved in programs helps them to prepare for college by participating in activities outside of high school, educating students about careers in numerous fields.
The AVID Program is a promising program for students, making sure that they do not fall short of their potentials. Hopefully, the program will expand and be able to assist more students in making their dreams realities.
(This article desperately needs quotes; I am trying to contact Mrs. Requeira to ask her about the specific collaborative program with the Bass Museum proposed. She will hopefully let me know which students partake in the program who I can question about their participation in past/present/future programs. )
